The Ibom Data Community (IDC) is a grassroots data and tech community based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. We bring together data enthusiasts, analysts, engineers, and beginners who are passionate about learning, collaboration, and using data skills to solve real-world problems. Our community is open to anyone interested in the data space — regardless of experience level.

IDC is for everyone! Whether you're a complete beginner just discovering data, an intermediate practitioner building your skills, or an experienced data professional looking to give back and connect — there is a place for you at IDC. Our members include students, working professionals, freelancers, and career switchers.

IDC is headquartered in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Many of our in-person events take place at RootHub, Start Innovation Hub, and other partner venues in Uyo. We also run online sessions accessible to members across Nigeria and beyond.

No — IDC membership is completely free. We believe that access to a supportive data community should never be a financial barrier. Some specific workshops or events may have a small logistics fee, but we always communicate this clearly in advance.

Not at all. You don't need any prior technical experience to become a member. Many of our current members started with zero data skills and have grown significantly through the community. IDC exists precisely to help beginners find their footing and grow alongside others on the same journey.

Absolutely — and we'd love that! We are always looking for volunteers to help with events, content creation, and community support. Community Member of the Week is our way of celebrating standout members who are actively learning, helping others, or making meaningful contributions to the community. Nominees are recognised within our community channels, and it's one of the many ways we keep the community spirit alive and encourage members to stay engaged.

IDC runs a variety of events throughout the year, including data conferences (like Ibom Data Connect), hackathons where participants solve real data problems, networking socials (like Tech Mixer), interactive Friday Games sessions, workshops, and online learning sessions. We try to mix learning with fun so there's something for everyone.

Friday Games is a fun, informal community activity where members engage in data-themed challenges, quizzes, and brain teasers. It's a great way to sharpen your analytical thinking, meet other members, and end the week on a high note. Participation is open to all IDC members and is completely free.

We run both! Larger flagship events like Ibom Data Connect and the Hackathon tend to be in-person in Uyo, while many workshops, mentorship sessions, and Friday Games can be attended online. We always specify the format when we announce an event, so keep an eye on our community channels.

The RootHub Google Scholarship is a partnership between IDC and RootHub through which four IDC community members received full Google Career Certificates scholarships. These scholarships cover programmes like the Google Data Analytics Certificate on Coursera — an industry-recognised credential that helps learners build job-ready data skills at no personal cost. This is one of our proudest achievements as a community.

We are actively working to unlock more scholarship and sponsorship opportunities for our members. Opportunities are announced through our community channels as soon as they become available. Being an active, engaged member increases your visibility and likelihood of being nominated for such opportunities.

IDC ran a 6-week free mentorship programme for four selected community members. Participants received one-on-one and group sessions with experienced data practitioners covering topics like data analysis, SQL, visualisation, and career development. The programme is designed to fast-track members who show drive and commitment. We plan to run more cohorts — watch this space.

Selection is based on community engagement, demonstrated learning commitment, and a short application process when a cohort is announced. There is no prior experience requirement — what matters most is your dedication and hunger to grow. Past participants have ranged from total beginners to those looking to level up from intermediate to advanced.

We recommend starting with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets to understand data manipulation fundamentals. From there, move into SQL to query databases, and then pick up a visualisation tool like Power BI or Tableau. Once you're comfortable, Python (especially Pandas) becomes a powerful next step. While IDC doesn't yet publish its own formal courses, we run regular workshops and learning sessions for members. We also curate lists of the best free and paid resources across tools and platforms — see our Resources page. Members in our community also regularly share tutorials, datasets, and project ideas within our channels.

Yes — everything we curate on our Resources page prioritises free, high-quality materials. Some external platforms we link to (like Coursera) have both free audit options and paid certificates. We always indicate whether something is free or paid. Our goal is to make data education accessible regardless of your budget.

The best way to learn data is by doing. We recommend working on real datasets from platforms like Kaggle, Data.gov, or the World Bank Open Data portal. Participate in IDC hackathons and Friday Games challenges. Reproduce analyses from articles or blogs you find interesting. Share your work — even a simple Excel analysis — with the community for feedback. Consistency beats perfection every time.
